Nelson Mandela was one of the most iconic leaders South Africa has ever known. After spending 27 years detained as a political prisoner he was released in 1991 after the fall of Apartheid. Then he was elected President in 1994 in the first truly democratic elections in South Africa.
Mandela spent 67 years in public service, committed to healing the nation and making the world a better place. The United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009. In honour of the 67 years Mandela dedicated, people across the country are asked to spend 67 minutes in the service of others.
In addition to the role Mandela had as a political leader he was also passionate about empowering youth and protecting the rights of children. One of his first actions he took on becoming President of the newly democratic South Africa in 1994 was to establish the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
BOSASA Groups commitment to community empowerment
Following the example set by BOSASA’s CEO, Gavin Watson every year BOSASA employees contribute one minute for every year Mandela was in public service.
Core to BOSASA’s vision and mission is the aim to empower South African companies and stay on the cutting edge of global technological advancements.
The Groups contribution to the upliftment of disadvantaged communities includes:
- a number of education programmes,
- orphanage support,
- community computer centres,
- youth centres
- and offender rehabilitation programmes.
BOSASA employees believe that it is in giving that we receive and are happy to get involved in a number of charitable works. Every year staff in various departments across the country take part in initiatives like planting community vegetable gardens, distributing food parcels to disadvantaged communities, and sponsoring education. Mandela Day is particularly special for us because it allows employees the opportunity to give back to their community.
Take action, inspire change, make every day Mandela Day!
Mandela Day serves as a reminder that everyone has the capacity to make a difference and contribute. It highlights the fact that even the smallest act of kindness and generosity can have a positive impact on someone else’s life. The BOSASA Group stands by its strong spiritual values and Christian ethos and encourages people to become involved in charity work and stand united as a nation.
